What is an Influential Blogger?

Just what kind of a person is an influential blogger? Letโ€™s start by eliminating current and shallow yardsticks on what truly defines an influential blogger. In my experience, an influential blogger is not solely shaped by the obvious metrics we usually associate it with.

An influential blogger is not the one who has the most number of subscribers and readers. An influential blogger is not the one who has the most number of comments from each blog post. An influential blogger is not the one who has the highest average daily earnings from various blog advertising networks. An influential blogger is also not the one who has the most impressive blog stats (the highest Alexa rank, most number of Technorati back links, and highest Google Page Rank). An influential blogger is not the one with the best and perfect writing skills. And lastly, an influential blogger is absolutely not the one who is very prominent and has a multitude of followers in every corner of the blog sphere.

An influential blogger is simply someone who can inspire and motivate others. Someone who can make you reach your goals, someone who can make you pursue the things you want to do, and someone who can keep you moving forward with aplomb and grace of a running deer in the prairie. There would be no use denying a fact as obvious as that.

This influential blogger can be someone that you hate, but you will find yourself following him even if itโ€™s against your heartโ€™s desire. You can’t easily get him off your mind because you are influenced by him. His hold on you is like blood flowing through your veins, keeps your heart pumping, and keeps your lungs breathing.

An influential blogger started out humbly, lower than most people would care to admit to have started out. He used to be a below mediocre. He was usually hated, forsaken and abandoned. He had to work his way, inch by inch so that he can reach the pinnacle someday and be an inspiration to others.

A truly influential blogger is kind, slow to anger, humble, just, friendly, polite, tactful, magnanimous, respectful, thoughtful, and compassionate. He doesn’t wage personal vendetta against those who oppose him. He is also considerate, loving, helpful, and worthy of imitation.

An influential blogger is wise. He makes sure that he writes with passion, whatever topic it is. He reaches out to his audience regularly so downtime is a no-no. Thus, he invest on a reliable yet cheap web host. He blogs out of passion not for profit.

You cannot tell yourself that you are influential. Only the people whom you have influenced can tell how influential you are. Just like me, I know and I think that I’m not an influential blogger. It’s up to the one who I had influenced to tell and proclaim that I’m indeed influential.

I think I’m not worthy to be nominated and be one of the finalists. But that’s just me. I know someone out there believed in me. Someone out there was influenced by me. And someone out there was inspired by what I do. That’s why that someone nominated me. If you’re that someone and you’re reading this, I want to thank you and I want to let you know that I’m really grateful and honored to be nominated.

We can’t deny the fact that everyone wants to win. To be cited as one of the finalists was already a priceless victory for me. To be crowned as the most influential against all the other influential bloggers in Asia is more than priceless. To be honest, I think that only a miracle can make me triumph against all the other contenders. Still, miracles do happen and I shouldn’t be pessimistic. But then again, that’s just me, being frank.

I’m so honored to be nominated as one of the finalists in the first Asia Pacific Blog Awards with these influential bloggers:

1. Kenny Sia – a really influential blogger from Malaysia. He has inspired a lot of other bloggers to follow his foot steps. He has a great sense of humor and I think this is one of his assets of being influential and being an inspiration to his readers, and stalkers as well.

2. Wendy Cheng โ€“ known to the world as XiaXue. A very prominent blogger from Singapore. Many hates her but she has legions of fans as well. People just can’t ignore Xiaxue – that’s how influential she is.

3. Beautiful Nara – a top entertainment blogger from Malaysia. He’s very humble despite that fact that he has myriad of fans visiting his blog day after day. Even if I can’t understand what he’s writing, I can tell that he’s really influential.

4. Rhonda Jean – a blogger from Queensland, Australia. Needless to say, she’s down to earth and she’s really an inspiration to others. She blogs about gardening, slowing down & being mindful, cooking simple food, etc.. Her readers are really inspired with what she’s doing and that makes her really influential.

I don’t know how I influenced you and I’m really not sure if I’m that influential compared with the other finalists. Am I really worthy to be nominated, let alone win in this prestigious blogging award? You be the judge. ^_^

  2. A lot of bloggers contributed some inspiration for me to aspire and improve as a blogger, but one thing is for sure:

Jehzeel Laurente is the biggest influence in my blogging career.

And with that, I just love you to bits. You are a good influence to us not only because you are a good example of a blogger who succeeded financially in blogging, but because you are a good friend and a sincere individual. We love you Jehz. We really do!

  3. This is one of your best posts, Jhez… really. ๐Ÿ™‚

I know you’ve had some influence on me (when you voted for me in Janette Toral’s 2007 Top 10 Emerging Influential Bloggers writing project/contest). To be honest, I never really craved the attention that resulted after winning 7th… I think I let the ensuing hullaballoo… kill my blogging passion. I used to blog just for myself and a few friends who really knew me… and I let fleeting “fame” (well, that’s a relative word, isn’t it?) affect the style and purpose of why I started blogging in the first place. I let myself be led astray – by blogging for AdSense, traffic, etc. Those things… are important for others… but not for me.

So I took an 8-month blogging sabbatical… and now I feel renewed. I love my blog and blogging again. ๐Ÿ™‚

If you win that award, it’s because you deserve it. And I said thank you back in 2007… but I will say it again… THANK YOU.

  4. This is a great post. It addresses both the newbies and the pros, in a straightforward and honest way. This should be a basic reference to those who wish to start blogging. I predict this will be a classic.

  5. I really like how you defined it “An influential blogger is simply someone who can inspire and motivate others. Someone who can make you reach your goals, someone who can make you pursue the things you want to do, and someone who can keep you moving forward…” simply the best definition that I’ve seen!

You’re so humble, which makes you more truly deserving. Bring home the bacon… good luck!

  6. I really like the way you wrote this entry. The emotion was so real, so sincere that I could feel it while reading each line. Honestly I haven’t read all your posts here but this one, I can tell that I felt you as a writer, not just a blogger.

Anyway I would like you to know that you had influenced me. I was careful not to copy everything you do, aside from the fact na di ko naman talaga kaya, laughs, like you, I have my own voice in writing.

You had influenced me because I was inspired by you. You are one of the reasons why I keep blogging. There was a time before that I wanted to give up, to change the route. But I did not do that. Because I wanted to achieve, at least some of the things you had already done and you made me realize that I can be myself, the real me, here in blogverse. I was challenged.

So what if no one follows me, or if the number of my readers you can easily count with all your fingers, I am fine with that. I can simply brag (Can’t think of other way to say it) that you were reading some of my posts. It really inspires me. And for that, the least that I can do is to nominate you. And I thank you. Sorry for my dramachine! Laughs!

Just simply wanna say you did influence me and thank you. You deserve my vote.

    • wow! thanks Fernand. And wow.. na impluwensyahan pala kita.. yay! yiheeeeeeeeee! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Stay humble always and forever. Keep updating your blog. ๐Ÿ™‚ Maraming nagbabasa nyan. Tahimik lang yung iba. Heehee…

  8. Jehz, I told you to keep the piece to yourself first. Haha, excited?!?

Kidding aside, I know you know how much I adore and thank you for all your support through the years (err, just 1 yr ++). For whatever it takes, you’re always behind us. PH Nuffies knew how much I am grateful for your generosity, your untiring effort to guide and support us when we were just starting out helped us reach our short-term goals.

When people in the community thought Geraldine / Nuffnang Philippines / Outcomm is a hoax / spam, it was you who responded right away and agreed to meet me up the following day! Remember, our very first meeting at Coffee Bean in High Street and how you unselfishly shared your knowledge and time to immerse myself in the blogosphere? I know Nuffies are somehow tired of this story na, coz I keep on reminding them how I am relieved to have you by my side and your support kept us going in those difficult days.

You are really one of the best Jehz, not because you never failed me, but because you served as an inspiration to others. May you continue to grow in this journey and give hope to aspiring bloggers out there.

Best of luck to you and just be ready, okay? ๐Ÿ™‚

P.S. I wish I can do something, but I am not part of it anymore. *Sigh* All I can say is, good luck to you ‘bunso’ at pakagalingan mo!

    • Not part? you’re still part no. In our hearts and minds and… our veins and lungs and everything. hahaha!

^_^ Di ko makakalimutan ang first meeting natin no. Hehe.

Syempre. I’ll support you and nuffnang all the way. Yay! Basta di ka lang magbago and I know di ka magbabago. Hehe.

Thanks jing. Thank you thank you thank you for being there always. Weeeeeeee!

  9. For me Jehzeel Laurente aka waldner, is really an influential blogger. He is the one who influenced me to do blogging. Hirap mag English haha! I always belittle myself kapag mababa ang pageviews ko, pero this post changed my view about anu nga ba ang influential blogger. He supported me kahit papano haha! To think n di ka karapat dapat maging finalist eh kabaliwan, sobrang humble mu naman kc. wag ganun msma un haha! Good Luck, naiiyak n ako.joke! Kahit d p tau nagkikita mahal n kita joke hahahaha!

  11. I love this post! You really hit the core of what an influencial blogger is and how that someone inspires people with great charisma moves people and eventually makes them come back for more. ^_^

Yeah, only we people who have been supporting you can testify that you’re an influencial blogger. As honest and transparent you are with your open thoughts about things in life and everthing else, your posts serve as mediums in which people can actually relate and learn from your experiences!

I’m so proud of you Jehz! As simple as how you draw a stickman, you can always make a good point in just simple steps. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I love your post!

Kahit na lalaki ka idol kita! Waaaah ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

We’ll cheer for your in SG! Nyok.

  12. This is a fantastic post Jehz! Ang galing ng pagkakasulat mo dito.

As for me, first of all thanks for the logo of my blog. Without you, it can’t be that good. Hahaha!!!!

Just remember na sana mag-save ka na din for your future. Continue to be humble and helpful to others. You are truly an inspiration to the blogging world and you truly deserve to be called an “influential blogger”.

    • Thanks tyrone! Fantastic talaga? wahehehe.. Welcome. Buti nagustuhan mo yung logo. teehee…

Yah.. yun lang sakit ko. Dapat makapagsave na talaga ako.. hehe. Thanks for reminding me always to save and thanks din for being a good friend. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  13. wow great post!
as what you have said, you can’t tell that your influential but i tell you… you’re really an influential blogger! isa na ako sa mga nainfluence mo! ๐Ÿ™‚ congratulations for being nominated and good luck! more power to you!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  14. You nailed it Jehz! It’s a big misconception that most bloggers think na the status “influential” has something to do with the metrics, earnings, no.of comments and stuffs. You’re totally right bout what you’ve said.

well to answer your question kung you’ve inspired me as a reader, my answer would be, I just finished reading a lot of your posts in your archive.. so guess what my answer is?

Superb post and Im really hoping a lot of bloggers (especially Filipinos) would be able to read this..

  15. wow…wat a masterpiece!! ilang araw mo ba tinapos tong post na tohh..sobrang pinagisipan ang mga words and sentences..daig pa ang nanalo ng isang palanca award or nobel peace prize in writing skills! woooott!

the 3rd paragraph really realized me a lot how Jehzlau influenced me so much as a blogger and how you deserve to be truly proclaimed as influential blogger! Now i should accept the fact that you influenced me so much in blogging and i will always be greatful and thankful for all your humbly and kindly help with me from the those time na nagstart pa lang ako sa pagbblog until now.

I owe you a lot and basta thanks for your unselfish and unwavering support..and for keeping me moving when im in trouble..nyahaha..alam mo na un..basta babawi ako!

Goodluck to your SG endeavor..we will all pray for you to win that award and we will surely cheer for you there!

    • hahaha! isang taon yan.. super.. tagal. hahahha! ๐Ÿ˜› thanks for the comment. basta wag mo lang e deactivate ang super cache, magiging stable yan at hindi mag dodown. hahahaha! ๐Ÿ˜€

      Wooooooooooot!

Thanks Chris for being a very very good friend! woooooot ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Mehhh… eh bumibili ako sayo ng load palagi eh. wahehehe.. wooot! Pero thanks bob ha. Kahit di pa tayo nagkita, you’re a one true friend online ๐Ÿ˜‰

  16. Wow! This is a very great post about being an influential blogger. And yes, I definitely agree with all that you said. I myself sometimes wonder why my main blog won as one of the most influential blogs of 2009 c/o Janet Toral’s contest and I don’t promote it that much recently. In fact, I am only now renting in an Internet cafe since I sold my PC before my blog was started to be nominated.

But then, I am really proud that I won even if there was some controversy that time.

Anyway, I want to congratulate you and I hope you win. For me, you’re such an influential blogger.

    Keep it up!

    • Yey! thanks father blogger. ๐Ÿ™‚ I know you deserve to win.

You are a father and a blogger. Influential ka sa mga anak mo, influential ka din for us.

Undeniably, you’re one of the greatest examples of an influential blogger. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  17. Wow! It’s such a nice post, medyo nahimasmasan ako at na-realize ko kung ano talaga ang ibig sabihin ng blogging. Ok lang pala kung magsisimula sa wala. Thank you sa tips and good luck sa contest.

  18. Love this:

“A truly influential blogger is kind, slow to anger, humble, just, friendly, polite, tactful, magnanimous, respectful, thoughtful, and compassionate. He doesnโ€™t wage personal vendetta against those who oppose him. He is also considerate, loving, helpful, and worthy of imitation.”

Mahirap gawin yan.

You said it well yourself, “You cannot tell yourself that you are influential. Only the people whom you have influenced can tell how influential you are.”

I wish you well. Sana manalo ka. You already are an influential blogger long before Nuffnang even cooked up this contest. Late for the party na sila eh. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Wow.. thanks for the message jan. *tears of joy* yah… napaluha ako ng 0.0030493 milliliters. hehehe. ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks talaga. Ikaw nga yung super influential dyan eh. hehehe. Kahit di mo sabihin, influential ka for us.

  19. Hi Jehz! I’m sure a lot of bloggers have emulated/ are emulating the value you have established for yourself by being the kind of person you are. ๐Ÿ™‚ I salute you, not just for being a VERY influential blogger, but more so of being a good person. ๐Ÿ˜› You have set a standard so high for the passion of the things you do and the kind of person others see in you. You are an inspiration to me and a whole bunch of bloggers out there. Hope I learn also from you. Keep it up , Jehz! And may you multiply yourself! A tap on your back saying, “good and wonderful job, my friend!” ๐Ÿ˜‰

  20. Hi Jehzlau,

Thanks a lot for the appraisal.

Thanks Beautiful Nara. I’m really curious what’s ur real name. hehehehe

  21. well influenced by blogging?? your absolutely right! people read blogs because they find them useful to either fulfill their desires or by gaining more knowledge. teaching everyone is the way forward.

  22. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Tuloy na Tuloy ka na! ๐Ÿ˜€ I’m very happy for you.
Have a great time in Singapura. Try the Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel if you have time. Try the food at any Food Republic place – ahh food bloggers heaven yun.

Still doubtful if you’re influential or not? Nyok! Nyok! <– sayo ko ito napulot.

Woot! <<— sayo ko rin yan napulot.

  23. this is the nicest post i have ever read. you truly deserve the nomination (syempre hoping for the award din). you are the most influential, yet humble blogger i have ever met. (nagpa-picture pa ako nung watchpad event sa mga nyokers). good luck and god bless.

    • yay. nakaka touch naman. Seriously? nicest post? wooooot.. I’m so happy each and everytime may nagsasabi na maganda yung post ko at maganda yung message. ๐Ÿ˜€

      Thanks again wentot. ๐Ÿ™‚

See you sa mga upcoming blogging events ha. ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. to become an influential blogger you need to be sincere and you need to make others feel they are important too.. and the most important is you have the respect of people around you..all of these defines how to be like kuya jehz. for me he is the most influential blogger with the most influential blog.

“Television is so influential that when an audience sees you day-in and day-out there’s a certain acceptance that sets in; you’re no longer a threatening personality. They become more willing to accept whatever you present.”-Doc Severinsen

  25. YES! You are influential Jehz. In some small way, you do influence me. Whether you like it or not, you are influential because you serve as an inspiration and motivation for me and for many Filipino bloggers out there. You would know that you are influential because people love being around you, I mean around your blog ๐Ÿ™‚ , waiting for your new post, your thoughts and ideas to be shared.

For us, Filipinos, you are already a winner! God Bless!

  26. just dropping by again just to visit you.. you know, i’ve learned a lot of things from this post, as newly blogger this would help me a lot.. but so far i know that i need to work hard in order to overcome those thing you had mentioned.. marami pa akong kakaining bigas.

    good luck bro.

  27. There is no way to perfectly measure influence – that is a time immemorial challenge of media, publishers, producers, artists, etc.. You have to look at ALL the metrics as a start and even then you really have make some subjective choice. In the case of awards, sometimes its a committee and public votes which what Nuffnang is doing, sometimes its members like Oscars and Emmy, Time’s person of the year is decided their editorial staff, the Nobel prize is decided by Five people, the Booker Prize, an advisory committee and judging panel.

Whatever process has some negatives. In the case of NN, the smaller Philippine market makes the public voting against it which means bloggers need to make it up some other ways and to influence the judges..You have to know the judges, what they are looking for. The committee will look at it like those of the Booker Prize variety, interesting content and also the conduct of the blogger in spreading the word on blogging and online publishing in general..

Jez should have had a publicist to publicise your work in the blogging community.. I believe you beat all the candidates in that area..

    • Hi JD!

      Keep on blogging ^_~

  28. with this post, garantisadong isa ka ngang influential blogger and therefore, sa pamantayan ni John Maxwell, maari ka na ring ituring bilang isa sa mga “emerging blog leaders”. padayon lang and gudlak.

  29. Great post. ๐Ÿ™‚

“An influential blogger is not the one who has the most number of subscribers and readers. An influential blogger is not the one who has the most number of comments from each blog post. 30. Lahat naman ng paikot-ikot at palipad lipad na nasa blogosperyo ay may nais iparating, kahit simpleng pagsasabi lamang na may libag siya sa kilikili hanggang sa pagsumpa sa kasalukuyang kalagayan ng bansa- nais ng manunulat na magpahayag ng kaniyang puso, isip at damdamin.

Marahil nakita nila ang mga sangkap na ito sa iyong tahanan Jehzlau.

    Ipinagkakapuri at binabati kita.

  33. I totally agree on the descriptions on the characteristics of being an influential blogger.
Esp the part where, they will remained in your mind even after you logged out of their sight.
    Good stuff =) Thanks!

Your site has Google PR 2, and at the same time Alexa rank is 50000 and each post gets tons of comments.

    Good job!
    Google PR is BS. ๐Ÿ˜€

  36. Si Dr. Jose Rizal kaya? Mahilig s’ya magsulat e, siguro kung nagba-blog din s’ya noon isa na rin s’ya sa mga influential blogger at the same time Bayani!.. A hero because of his/ her blog?

    Peace!!

  37. Congrats bro,

Marami ako natutunan. Sana marami kapa matulungan at mabahagian ng karunungan. God bless.!!!!

  39. Nice post! I think the desire for metrics, driven mostly by marketing folks, has masked the less tangible core of what it is to be influential. While subscriber bases, comments and page views may hint at a blogger’s influence, there are enough “techniques” out there artificially boosting scores to render the connection between metrics and influence suspect. Keep up the good work, you certainly influenced me!

  40. hello jehz.
i heard you from a new friend who is an active blogger. i was intrigued by you and your success. after i read this post, i was inspired to blog and be an inspiration to my students. i am a public school teacher and i hate the bad impressions on us. i am proud to be a public school teacher and that is what i am going to share in my blog. thank you for sharing your life through blogging..hope i could share to my life to others as you have. 41. Most websites fail to generate as much business leads as they are intended to and this is largely due to ill placed information, lack of information or poor usability. A rational customer, before making a purchase, would actually like to know how well you support your product services after he buys it. And more often than not, the home page or the main information page on the websites highlights the โ€˜buy nowโ€™ or โ€˜buy todayโ€™ with the customer support / product support link hidden somewhere in the footer or the far corner.

Thanks sa mga Information mo dito sa site mo bro ๐Ÿ™‚ Your simply the Best!

  43. Hi, As you are rolling over with blog against fake blogs i agree with you… Do you know how?.. I read this full message which is really influential to my kind of addicted persons to the blogs… Commenting blog is not important when we are reading and understanding the writers knowledge about the topic, then after we have to write some comment like it’s good or giving some suggestions.. really good one.. keep going..
