Slumdog Millionaire Review

I’ll be reviewing the movie “Slumdog Millionaire” after I finish watching it. So stay tuned for more updates about this block buster hit! Btw, if you don’t know what Slumdog Millionaire is, it’s an 8-time Academy Award-winning 2008 British drama film directed by Danny Boyle, co-directed by Loveleen Tandan, and written by Simon Beaufoy. It is an adaptation of the Boeke Prize-winning and Commonwealth Writers’ Prize-nominated novel Q & A (2005) by Indian author and diplomat Vikas Swarup.

Based on IMDB, Slumdog Millionaire Movie is the story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost.

Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions. Each chapter of Jamal’s increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show’s seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out. At the heart of its storytelling lies the question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life and love.

This movie is definitely a must-see!

Update 01/14/08: This is just a show review of the movie. After watching this awesome Drama movie, all I can say that if it’s written, it’s really written. You don’t need to be a genius to know everything. Jamal knows the answers from experience. The last question was still answered correctly even if he don’t know. It’s because he already found what he was looking for, Latika. They we’re separated since child hood. Latika is the only girl she love and Latika is the most beautiful woman for him. He joined “Who wants to be a millionaire” because he thought that Latika would watch the show and he’s right. After calling a friend for the last question and hearing the voice of Latika, he’s fulfilled and felt triumph from his goal. He answered Letter A in the last question about the 3 Musketeers even if he wasn’t sure about it. I think this is just based on his instincts because all the last letter of the names of the Musketeers is “S”, I think that’s his only basis for winning.

To come to an end, the movie is great and a must-see just like Forrest Gump. This movie should be included in the book “1000 movies to see before you die” Hehe. Btw, if you want to read a better review, here’s a detailed review by Irvin that was posted at MovieNews.me!

Update 02/22/09:After being nominated 10 times in the Oscars, it won 8 times in the 81st Academy Awards. It was proclaimed as the Best Picture in the recent Academy Awards, including Best Music Song, Best Music Score, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Cinematography, Best Director and Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay). Congratulations to the cast and crew, specially to the Director and Producer of this film! You all truly made a history in the Academy Awards, Bollywood Film Industry, and the world!

And oh, here’s a news quote from MSNBC:

LOS ANGELES – Hollywood has met Bollywood at the Academy Awards, and the makers of Oscar champ “Slumdog Millionaire” hope it’s a sign of future melding between the U.S. dream factory with its counterparts in India and elsewhere in the world.

A tale of hope amid adversity and squalor in Mumbai, “Slumdog Millionaire” came away with eight Oscars, including best picture and director for Danny Boyle.

The low-budget production was a merger of India’s brisk Bollywood movie industry, which provided most of the cast and crew, and the global marketing reach of Hollywood, which turned the film into a commercial smash, said British director Boyle.

Again, congratulations to Slumdog Millionaire cast and crew for the job well-done! Freida Pinto rocks!
