Blackberry Bold 9700 White BIS Problem in the Philippines

On July 9, 2010, in Technology, by Eugene Rutterford

If you recently bought a Blackberry Bold 9700 Executive Edition (Bold 9700 White) then you activated your BIS and received an SMS confirmation that your BIS is activated, but after waiting for a few hours, your BIS is still not active, then you might be looking for someone who encountered the same exact dilemma as you have encountered.

A friend of mine from the Philippines bought a White Blackberry Bold 9700. He tried to activate its Blackberry Internet Service (BIS) via Globe Telecom by sending a BB ON 1200 to 8888. He received the confirmation message that his BIS is active, but after patiently waiting for 10 hours, his BIS is still not active. He tried to run the mobile network diagnostics and found out that his BIS is really not active.

He called Globe and asked for support, but to no avail. Globe suggested to change the unit to a Black Blackberry Bold 9700, because White Blackberry Bold 9700 has instances of being “cloned” or “locked”. They told me him that they also encountered the same problem with other users before.

My friend from the Philippines didn’t believe what Globe told him, so he switched to Smart. He bought a Smart Sim Card, sent BB MONTH to 2207, and waited for the confirmation message. He received the confirmation message that his BIS is already active, but the same problem occurred with Smart.

After patiently waiting for almost a day, the BIS is still not active. Smart Communications called him and informed him that the problem is not with their network, but with the unit. Smart suggested to return the unit to the seller and change the unit to a Black Blackberry Bold 9700.

So if you’re from the Philippines and you bought a White Blackberry Bold 9700, you may have encountered this problem. All you need to do is return your unit and get a black one, until this issue resolved.

As of now, we still don’t have an official statement from RIM why their White Blackberry Bold 9700 handsets doesn’t work in some countries, including the Philippines.

We’ll update this post if we found a solution regarding this problem.
