This is very strange to me that you have problem with CNAME settings for Google apps because i have set up an free account with Google and did set CNAME settings according to tutorial available at Google and i did it without any problem with first try. It is working perfectly and the CNAME settings updated around the world at DNS servers with in 4-6 hours. Actually i did worked with in 20 min from the settings.

Check your settings again properly.
