What is a Smart Card?

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

Technology cards, or “smart cards”, offer dramatic advancements in ID card security and functionality. Smart cards are small and tamper-resistant. They store, process, communicate and encrypt large amounts of data, including biometric data and monetary values. Smart cards are often used for logical access control to networks or databases, or physical access control to buildings or rooms.

Generally speaking, it is card with embedded circuitry — typically a microprocessor with internal memory — programmed to store information or execute tasks. Data transmission is made via either direct physical contact with a reader, or by holding a card within a few inches of a secure contactless interface.

Unlike other authentication technologies, smart cards can confirm identities in three ways:
» Something you have (a secure ID card)
» Something you know (a password)
» Something you are (a palmprint or eye retinal scan)

Types of smart cards
Smart cards fall into two categories: contact and contactless.
Contact smart cards have a copper interface pad embedded on the surface of the card. The card must be inserted into a smart card reader to make a direct connection for the transfer of data.

Contact smart cards typically have more memory and processing power than contactless cards. Some data encryption processes (used in high-security financial or legal applications) can only be performed by contact smart cards. Contact smart card readers work well in office environments, but not outdoors or in industrial applications.

Contactless smart cards only require close proximity to a reader (usually within a few inches) to achieve data transmission. Both the smart card and reader have internal antennas and wireless circuitry for secure communication. Using advanced data encryption techniques, contactless smart cards are every bit as secure as their contact counterparts. Contactless smart cards are ideal for access control, mass transit, vending and cafeteria payment, and dozens of other applications.

Other types of technology cards
While not actually “smart cards”, these other card technologies can enhance the security and functionality of your ID cards:

Proximity cards bring keyless convenience to physical access control systems. Prox cards contain an internal antenna that cardholders wave within a few inches of the reader to request access.

“Combi” proximity cards integrate photo ID, prox, magnetic stripe and even smart card technology into a single card, eliminating the need to carry multiple cards for different purposes.

“Combi” smart cards allow a single smart chip to securely interface with both contact and contactless readers.

Hybrid smart cards contain two smart chips — one with a contact interface, the other contactless — effectively doubling the functionality and security of the card.

Optical laser cards transform CD-ROM technology into ID card form, capable of securely storing megabytes of information.

AJAX Upload

Friday, January 19th, 2007

In good programming languages there is almost always more than one way to accomplish a goal, PHP is no different. Here we have two very different methods for showing an AJAX progress bar during a file upload which were recently discussed by bloggers Tomas Larsson and Joshua Eichorn.

Tomas describes his approach in Asynchronous file upload with AJAX progress bar in PHP using Prototype combined with PHP to accomplish his effect. Toss in a derivative of MegaUpload for server side receiving and monitoring of the upload, and you have a complete package.

Going a different route, Joshua provides PAFUPMU, a set of classes to show upload progress using HTML_AJAX. With any PHP version newer than 4.3.7 or 5.0 it provides similar functionality to Tomas’ solution. For older versions of PHP you either need to add a patch, or end up with a basic animation and no progress bar (reminded me a bit of KIT from Knight Rider, or the Cylon oscillating faceplate, pick one).

Although somewhat different approaches, both methods do agree on using hidden iframes to allow file uploading.

Fargo Pro-L Series Printer Glossary

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

Dye-Sublimation
Dye-sublimation is the process your printer uses to print smooth, continuous-tone images that look truly photographic. This process uses a dye-based ribbon roll that is partitioned by a number of consecutive color panels (see Section 4-A for more ribbon information). The panels are grouped in a repeating series of the four process colors Ñ yellow, magenta, cyan, and black Ñ along the entire length of the ribbon. The printer always prints the yellow panel first, followed by the magenta panel, the cyan panel, and finally the black panel. As the ribbon and card pass simultaneously beneath the printhead, hundreds of thermal elements within the printhead heat the dyes on the ribbon. When these dyes are heated, they vaporize and diffuse into the surface of the card. By varying the heat intensity of each thermal element within the printhead, it is possible for each transferred dot of color to vary in hue, thus blending one color smoothly into the next and producing photo-realistic images.

Resin Thermal Transfer
Resin Thermal Transfer is the process your printer uses to print sharp black text and crisp bar codes which can be read by both infra-red and visible-light bar code scanners. It is also the process used to print ultra-fast, one-color ID cards. Like dyesublimation, this process uses the same thermal printhead to transfer color from the ribbon roll to the card. The difference, however, is that solid dots of color are transferred in the form of a resin-based ink which fuses to the surface of the card when heated.

Discover PHP5 with WAMP5 !

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

What’s that? if you don`t know what’s WAMP, it stands for Windows, Apache, MySQL and PHP! It’s a bundled open source, FREE server for PHP! I think, it’s better than appserv (the one that I am using on our LAN php powered dynamic database driven pages), - ang haba no?, but I havn’t tried it yet, I just found this link in phpbb as I am browsing their forums and looking phpbb MODS, and asking for some php tips to modify our Savantage forums! Hehe.. I’m planning to test this on a seperate web server. I’m so excited of this new php server, and can’t wait to see the new features of it, specially the latest version of phpMyAdmin that was bundled with it.

They say PHP 5 is pretty fast, compared to PHP 4, and it supports more libraries and syntax compared to PHP 4, so, whether I like it or not, I should upgrade and move to the latest version of PHP. Whew! This will be a headache for me again. It will be like giving someone a pain relief for an antbite by doing brain surgery and disconnecting their brain’s pain receptors from the rest of their body.

Last November 2, 2006, the latest version of the bundled open source php server was released: WAMP5 1.6.6 : with PHP 5.2.0 Live from the Zend/PHP, a new release of WAMP5 including the very lastest version of PHP 5.2.0. This release also includes MySQL 5.0.27 and the latest version of phpmyadmin. Visit www.wampserver.com for more info.

RTHDCPL.EXE - Illegal System DLL Relocation

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

If you’re here looking for ways of how to fix this RTHDCPL.EXE - Illegal System DLL Relocation error, you’ve come to the right place.

Here are the symptoms of the problem and how to fix it from Microsoft Support website:

Symptoms of the problem
Certain programs may not start after you install security update 925902 (MS07-017) and security update 928843 (MS07-008) on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2). Additionally, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
application_executable_name - Illegal System DLL Relocation

The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\Hhctrl.ocx occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
1. Install all important updates here.

2. Try to run the program that did not start again. If the program starts and if you do not receive the error message in the “Symptoms of the problem” section, you are finished. If the error continues, follow steps 3 through 5.

3. Visit this website.

4. Click Download, and then click Run. If the Download button is not available, you must first click Validate to validate your copy of Windows.

5. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install update 935448.

Our last day? Asteroid may hit Earth on April 13, 2029

Friday, January 12th, 2007

More than 100,000 asteroids hurtle past our planet. But only one–that we know of–may hit us in the next 30 years. Friday the 13th of April 2029 could be a very unlucky day for planet Earth. At 4:36 am Greenwich Mean Time, a 25-million-ton, 820-ft.-wide asteroid called 99942 Apophis will slice across the orbit of the moon and barrel toward Earth at more than 28,000 mph. The huge pockmarked rock, two-thirds the size of Devils Tower in Wyoming, will pack the energy of 65,000 Hiroshima bombs — enough to wipe out a small country or kick up an 800-ft. tsunami.

On this day, however, Apophis is not expected to live up to its namesake, the ancient Egyptian god of darkness and destruction. Scientists are 99.7 percent certain it will pass at a distance of 18,800 to 20,800 miles. In astronomical terms, 20,000 miles is a mere stone’s throw, shorter than a round-trip flight from New York to Melbourne, Australia, and well inside the orbits of Earth’s many geosynchronous communications satellites. For a couple of hours after dusk, people in Europe, Africa and western Asia will see what looks like a medium-bright star creeping westward through the constellation of Cancer, making Apophis the first asteroid in human history to be clearly visible to the naked eye. And then it will be gone, having vanished into the dark vastness of space. We will have dodged a cosmic bullet.

Maybe. Scientists calculate that if Apophis passes at a distance of exactly 18,893 miles, it will go through a “gravitational keyhole.” This small region in space — only about a half mile wide, or twice the diameter of the asteroid itself — is where Earth’s gravity would perturb Apophis in just the wrong way, causing it to enter an orbit seven-sixths as long as Earth’s. In other words, the planet will be squarely in the crosshairs for a potentially catastrophic asteroid impact precisely seven years later, on April 13, 2036.

The Greatest Show in the World?

While I’m strolling around SM Mall of Asia, I found a poster about an event called “Pyro Olympics”. I wondered what is it.
